little dean jail
Little dean jail holds a huge collection of crime memorabilia within its jail walls.
The prison’s first inmate was a 19-year-old laborer charged with stealing a spade, but went on to include prostitutes, arsonists, murderers, and even children as young as 8, and the last woman to be tried for “witchcraft” in Gloucestershire. (She was acquitted, but spent the time of the trial in the jail.)
Converted first to a police station and stables, used as the set of the Hammer Horror film House of Whipcord, and later as a storage facility, in 2003 the 200-year-old prison was bought by current owner Andy Jones. Jones moved into one wing of the prison with his wife and six children and turned the other into something rather appropriate for the space: a crime museum.
Proclaiming it the “Alcatraz of the Forest,” he says that it contains “one of the world’s largest and finest private collections of crime-related memorabilia, ephemera and curiosities.” The museum is very much in the dime-freakshow tradition holding not just crime memorabilia but anything designed to excite morbid curiosity in viewers. Among the museum’s items are:
The prison’s Guillotine and Body Cages, instruments of punishment and torture through the ages, a model of Littledean Jail created from 56,000 matches, Nazi SS uniforms, Ku Klux Klan uniforms, a murder victim’s full skeleton, exhibits of Britain’s “maddest, hardest and most dangerous prisoners in the UK” including Charles Bronson and The Kray twins, voodoo dolls, the UK’s largest private collection of British and foreign police memorabilia, including police weapons, uniforms and Victorian hand-painted truncheons, “freaks of nature, oddities and curiosities,” autographed and signed materials from world-renowned villains and criminals, banned violent toy collections, and for no real clear reason, a Doctor Who Dalek.
Despite being rather despised by the local Forest of Dean Council planning officers, and having been threatened with imprisonment (though he already lives in a prison) and boycotts, owner Andy Jones continues to build his ever-growing collection of all things crimnal, curious, and creepy.

jail tours
Jailhouse Tours was the brain child of Joel Campbell, conceived through an unsuccessful bid to purchase Shepton Mallet Prison (Cornhill) in Somerset in 2014.
As part of the bid Joel and his team decided to release a website detailing their plans for the prison site should the bid be successful. The website was exceptionally well received by the town and residents from further afield. Within 2 days of launching the site it had gained 8,000 views and the team were inundated with emails and requests to book tours, experiences, training days, events and even weddings.
After numerous delays throughout the process the team were finally informed late in 2014 that their bid had been unsuccessful. A bitter disappointment for all involved, but from this grew a new idea, Jailhouse Tours. The concept was simple, access historic sites that are due to be developed and operate tours and events from these locations.
After searching the country for suitable locations we came across Shrewsbury prison (the Dana) which had recently been acquired by the Osbourne Group. Following numerous meetings and site visits an agreement was struck and Jailhouse Tours secured its first prison site.
Jailhouse Tours runs guided tours, theme events and experiences, educational days, history days, seasonal events, horror tours and School tours. Jailhouse Tours also manages private bookings and hire of Shrewsbury Prison.

clerkenwell prison tour
Hidden beneath the streets of Clerkenwell lay the remains of a once-feared institution of punishment. The Clerkenwell House of Detention has been a prison since 1617. The current vaults date from the Victorian prison of 1845.
Inside, you will experience infamous, potently atmospheric and cavernous places.
Here is a rare opportunity to take a tour of the prison. Led by expert guides, you will be able to see the cells, corridors, stairwells and inter-connecting walkways – including some that have very rarely been seen by the public.
Previous productions to have made use of the Clerkenwell House of Detention include Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr (representing the tunnels below Westminster), Spooks, The Secret Diary of a Call Girl and St Trinian’s 2.
